Why postpartum care is necessary.?

Bringing a new life into the world is a miracle — but it’s also one of the most intense physical, emotional, and hormonal journeys a woman ever experiences. Postpartum care is necessary. The days and months after childbirth — called the postpartum period — are not just about recovering from birth; they are about rebuilding your strength, your vitality, and your inner balance.
Both Ayurveda and modern science agree:
Postpartum care isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

The Ayurveda Perspective

In Ayurveda, the first 42 days after delivery are called the Sutika Kaala — a sacred window where a mother’s body is incredibly open, sensitive, and responsive. postpartum care is necessary.
It is believed that during this time, the dhatus (body tissues) are still tender, the digestive fire (agni) is weak, and the doshas, especially vata, are disturbed.
If a new mother is not properly cared for during Sutika Kaala:
• She may experience chronic fatigue, anxiety, joint problems, hormonal imbalance, or weakened immunity later in life.
• Emotional imbalances like postpartum sadness or anxiety can become deeper and longer lasting. postpartum care is necessary.
Thus, Ayurveda prescribes a careful daily routine:
• Warm, nourishing foods that are easy to digest
• Herbal decoctions to rebuild strength and immunity
• Gentle massages to stabilize the body and mind
• Adequate rest, emotional support, and protection from physical or mental stress
Ayurveda also suggests breastfeeding for at least one to three years when possible — not just for the baby’s health, but for the mother’s emotional bonding, hormonal balancing, and gradual recovery too.

The Modern Science Perspective

Today’s medical research supports many of these ancient truths:
• Breastfeeding mothers require an extra 400–500 calories daily to maintain milk production and energy levels.
• Hormones like oxytocin and prolactin, which rise during breastfeeding, are crucial for emotional well-being, bonding, and preventing postpartum depression.
• Sleep deprivation, social isolation, and inadequate nutrition are major contributors to postpartum mood disorders.
Science now recommends:
• Nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diets
• Mindful emotional support
• Helping mothers establish breastfeeding successfully
• Prioritizing mental and physical recovery over rushing back to ‘normal life’
